Effective now through January 4, 2010, many U.S. airlines have lifted the advance purchase rules to travel this holiday season.

With many business travelers closing down shop and planning to either stay home for the next three weeks for the holidays or travel with the family, the major airlines are now offering no advance purchase airfares for travel
now through January 4, 2010.
The airlines that waived their holiday advance purchase requirements are American
Airlines, United Airlines, Delta Airlines, Northwest Airlines, US Airways,
Frontier Airlines, AirTran Airways, and Midwest Airlines.
Continental Airlines is the only legacy airline still requiring a three day
advance purchase, but this may change very soon.
Holiday air travelers will continue to pay a premium over the current
fare sale prices we see for the first two months of 2010. With the lack of
business travelers, the airlines have reduced their airfares substantially below
their everyday no advance purchase airfares.
For example, American Airlines everyday no advance purchase airfares between
Dallas and New York City was selling yesterday for $1,858 roundtrip. Today, you
can purchase this airfares as low as $388 roundtrip.
From Atlanta to Seattle Delta Airlines no advance purchase airfares sold
yesterday for $1,198 roundtrip. Today, you can fly for as low as $258 roundtrip.
There are also other restrictions travelers need to be aware of. Unlike
standard fare sales that you must fly on a Tuesday or Wednesday to qualify for
the lowest airfares, this sale is date specific for the lowest airfares.
There are four levels of airfares to qualify for the cheapest airfares. You
must travel on the below dates to qualify for the cheapest airfares:
Level 1 - The cheapest airfares are available on December 25, and Jan
1, 4, 2010.
Level 2 - The second level airfares are approximately 30% higher than the
lowest airfares. Travel is valid on December 24, 30, 31, 2009.
Level 3 - The third level is approximately 55% higher then the lowest
airfares. Travel dates will be December 26, 28, 29, 2009.
Level 4 - The three dates you should use caution with are December 27, and
January 2, 3, 2010. These travel dates have not been included in the holiday
airfare sale, therefore being significantly more expensive.
We still suggest that travelers should do comparison shopping to find the lowest holiday airfares and to also compare nearby alternate airports for lower fares.
