The Answer: The tradition of Ball dropping dates back to the English. The first ball was dropped in 1833 by Englanders at the Royal Observatory in Greenwich. The ball was not dropped at midnight but a 1 pm every afternoon allowing captains of nearby ships to precisely set their vital navigation instruments called chronometers.
This concept was picked up around the world in 150 ports due to the success of the Greenwich time ball drop.
Even today this tradition still continues by the United States Naval Observatory in Washington DC where a time ball is dropped daily a 12 noon. The New Yorkers moved it up to 12 midnight and of course only do it once a year
