Northwest Joins Delta And US Airways In Adding Surcharge To Redeem Frequent
Flyer Mileage.
The latest new fee being imposed by airlines struggling to cope with rising
fuel costs is a surcharge to redeem frequent flier miles for airline tickets.
Northwest became the latest carrier to announce the new fee, following the lead
of Delta and US Airways who had previously announced such changes to their
programs.
On Northwest, frequent flyer award tickets issued after September 15, 2008,
will be hit with a charge of $25 for domestic travel, $50 for transatlantic
travel and $100 for transpacific travel.
US Airways new policy affects frequent flyer tickets issued after August 6,
2008. They will impose a $25 fee for domestic and Canada travel, $35 for tickets
to Mexico and the Caribbean, and $50 for tickets to Hawaii and international
destinations outside North America.
Delta's new fee kicks in for frequent flyer tickets booked August 15, 2008 or
later. They will assess a fee of $25 for domestic and Canada travel and $50 for
transatlantic and transpacific travel.
