FAA Computer Snafu Causes Many Flight Delays And Cancellations.
On Tuesday, August 26, 2008, the electronic communications system that
process flight plans for the eastern United States had a major failure. Flight departures
and flight arrivals to the northeast got hit the hardest. At Bestfares.com, we
have dozens upon dozens of computers and we don't trust a single one. Thousands
of flights across America were effected by this snafu.
By late Tuesday, the systems in both Atlanta and Salt Lake City were talking
to each other, but delays upon delays, cancellations upon cancellations,
thousands of passengers were waiting to go nowhere fast. With this being the end
of the official Summer travel season and Labor Day weekend, it couldn't have
happened at a worse time.
Oh, by the way, the question was how many flight plans does the FAA process
in a 24 hour period? The answer is over 300,000 flights daily.
