Snooze You Lose Airfares On Sale This Weekend For Late Summer And Fall Travel!
Well folks, we’ve been telling you for quite some time now as we enter peak summer travel the number of last minute getaways will start to shrink.During this past winter and spring, we saw sometimes as many as 1,200 last minute getaways where you could depart on Friday after 7 pm or anytime on Saturday as long as you returned on the following Monday or Tuesday.
This week due to heavy load factors and many planes sold out, the major airlines are being very chintzy, and we only found approximately 100 airfares to departures for this weekend, and next weekend combined. That’s almost a 90% drop in the amount of cheap last minute destinations. It will probably stay that way until after Labor Day; at which around that time we should see at least 500 plus last minute airfares for each week.
If there is any good news, we are starting to see big price drops for travel in late August through December 17, 2014. For example, the nonstop airfares on American Airlines to New York City (LaGuardia) or Washington D.C. (National) is averaging over $400 roundtrip for coast to coast travel. Starting late August these airfares drop to $259 to $269 roundtrip, a savings of over $150 per person roundtrip!
Also do not forget nearby cities. Currently, the roundtrip airfares from Dallas to Providence, Hartford, and Manchester, NH are selling for about $458 roundtrip for summer travel. However, fly to nearby Boston (about one and half hours away by car) and your airfare drops to an average nonstop price of $229 roundtrip. That’s about half price, and over a $200 per person savings cheaper.
- Denver- $99 RT
- Philadelphia- $149 RT
- Atlanta, Chicago- $219 RT
- Boston- $229 RT
- Ft. Lauderdale- $239 RT
- Orlando, Tampa, New York City, Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Diego-$279 RT

Fares To Europe Drop For Fall, and Winter
Travel to Europe for the next 70 days will be sky-high. The average airfares can range between $1,500 to $2,000 roundtrip; especially, during the month of July. If you can travel after Labor Day through March of next year, you will find airfares as much as $800 lower than peak July. Many of you could save between $1,000 to $1,600 per couple by traveling in late summer, fall, or winter. That's big buck savings!
One of our cheapest destinations across the board this fall is Istanbul. From Boston, we are finding airfares to Istanbul as low as $519 roundtrip. Remember, most of Europe has a mandatory $516 fuel surcharge. On to top of that you have international taxes, and 9/11 fees ranging between $100 to $199 per ticket, and then there is the actual airfare. So when you see an airfare with all taxes, and fuel surcharges, and the total price of the airfare is in the $500 to $800 range, then you've got yourself a heck of a good deal.
But the cheapest airfares we have been able to find this week is to Dublin, Ireland from many US destinations. Dublin to Boston is selling from $485 roundtrip, all taxes included. However, our absolute cheapest airfare is to Ponta Delgada, Portugal selling from Boston for as little as $319 RT.
Airfares during September and October may be slightly higher than for travel between November through March 19, 2015.
Insider secret- From some US cities you may find it cheaper to depart from another nearby city, or by purchasing two separate roundtrip tickets; one from your home airport to another USA city that is a cheap international gateway. Then purchasing a second roundtrip ticket from the cheap USA gateway to Europe.
Furthermore, we have included two great cities in Europe that you may not be thinking of, which would be Budapest, and Bucharest. You can stay at great hotels at half the price you would pay to stay in Rome, London, Paris, or Amsterdam. Food and drinks are also considerably cheaper in these two destinations compared to European standards. For example, a beer could cost you about $1.50 US, and a decent glass of wine only about $2.50 US; which is even cheaper than what you can find at your local watering hole.
You may want to do a little research on these two cities. Not only do you save on airfare, but also the lodging. There are many luxury 4-star properties that are below the average cost, plus you will be able to dine at 4-star restaurants at a fraction of the cost which makes this trip a great value all around. Oh, by the way, if you do get a little homesick, a Big Mac is a little pricey at $3.30 US.
Check out these late summer, fall, and winter airfares to Europe we priced for travel departing mid-week for travel December 2 through March 2015, but you will find similar airfares for travel departing between September 1 and March 19, 2015.

Don't Just Stand There, Run Towards These Cheap Late Summer And Fall Snooze You Lose Airfares!
In about 70 days airfares across America, Hawaii, the Caribbean, and Europe will drop dramatically. The good news is, if you can hold off on your travel plans until then, you will not save just a few bucks, but hundreds of dollars per person.
The bad news is that currently for peak July travel, especially for coast to coast travel, airfares are hitting $500 or more, per person on many routes. Come late August and throughout the fall, many of these airfares will drop into the low $300 range, and some even less.
Check out these comparisons below showing midweek departures in peak July versus midweek airfares for travel during September.
|September 10-17||You save per person|
|Boston to Seattle||$639||$339||$300|
|Portland, OR to Ft. Lauderdale||$539||$294||$245|
|New York City to San Francisco||$489||$349||$140|
|Washington DC to Orange County||$535||$385||$150|
|Los Angeles to Atlanta||$439||$289||$150|
Airfares to Hawaii, especially from the West Coast are starting to drop around August 12, 2014. You should avoid travel on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays to qualify for the Bestfares.
We are seeing that if you depart on a Saturday, and return on a Saturday, during this time frame, you will see the most expensive fares out of any other day of the week to travel. We could see fall airfares come down even lower than the prices below once we are past the busy peak summer travel season.
Check out these sample airfares we found for September travel versus what you would be paying if you traveled to Hawaii during peak July.

Family Vacations For Summer, Buyer Beware
Bestfares.com has a easy-friendly booking tool that will help you fare compare nearby alternate airports with one single search. When booking, just click on our nearby airports feature and you can choose up to three nearby departure and arrival airports to compare the cheapest prices.
For example, if you live in San Francisco and are planning a trip to Boston, by clicking our "Compare Nearby Airport" feature you should request fares from San Francisco, San Jose (CA) and Oakland. All are nearby airports to San Francisco, up to 31 miles apart. To fare compare the closest airports to Boston, click on nearby airports. Providence (RI) and Manchester (NH) airports are less than 49 miles from Boston.
We are seeing that the cheapest seats for July travel usually are only on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and some Saturdays. If you are wanting to travel for less this summer; we strongly suggest you use our flexible dates travel calendar and space out your potential trip over seven days. This will give you a 10-day calendar showing you what days will be the cheapest to depart and return; and will ensure that you are getting the Bestfares out there!
While getting a good price on airfare is important, there are other travel costs to consider, like how much your hotel stay will cost, how much a car rental will be and how much you’ll pay for parking. When you are looking at hotel rates, you need to remember that the more expensive the hotel, the more incidentals will cost, from parking to room service.
We looked at the price for a one week car rental in San Francisco in July and the cheapest rate we found was $331 for a compact car. If you stay at a hotel in downtown San Francisco you could pay $53 or more per day to park at the hotel, which adds up to another $370, plus tax.
You’d be paying over $700 for that car. Instead of renting for the week, take the BART train to downtown San Francisco and if you do need a car for the day to go to Sonoma or Napa Valley, see what the rate is at the hotel, or call Enterprise for a rental.
When I first started flying to San Francisco in the 1980s it was an expensive cab ride from the airport to downtown, but now we have the BART train. In a few more months we will have DART trains to DFW and that will make it a lot less expensive to get to downtown Dallas without a car.
Even Newark has a train to take you to downtown Manhattan, so instead of paying $50-$75 for taxi ride, you can pay $12.50 one-way on the train and skip the traffic and tolls and can get there fast.
In a city like Dallas, you’ll probably want a rental car if you want to see the sights because they are spread out. There are a lot of 3- and 4- star hotels that don’t charge for parking, so you don’t have the kind of parking fees you find in some large cities. Atlanta is another city that has a ton of hotels that don’t charge for parking.
If you’re flying to a destination with multiple airports, check the car rental rates before you buy a ticket. The rental prices can vary due to airport taxes, so when you fly to places like Houston, Southern California, or Fort Lauderdale or Miami you may be able to save money by choosing a different airport.
Another way to save on food costs is to look at condo style hotels and chains that offer kitchenettes. We see a lot of these in Orlando and they are available in other areas, so look for a room with a kitchen or a kitchenette when booking. You can save a bundle on food by making your own and having your own snacks available day and night.
Insider tip: While I’ve complained about the all the fees Spirit Airlines charges, they do have some dirt cheap fares. If you’ve got a family of four, you may want to consider checking two bags, instead of four, and make sure you prepay online before you get to the airport for a much more reasonable rate. If you’re a couple, you should share one checked bag. When checking bags, make sure your bag is under 40 pounds, because that is the limit Spirit permits before you’ll also be hit with overweight luggage fees. Other airlines allow bags to be up to 50 pounds, so don’t forget this lower weight limit when packing.
It costs $30 for the first checked bag if you pay at time of booking or before check-in and $35 if you pay during online check-in. If your bag is 41-50 pounds, you’ll pay an extra $25. If you have more than one person traveling and you need to check two backs, be sure to check one per person because the fee for the first checked bag per person is cheaper than the fee for the second checked bag per person.
Unlike other airlines, Spirit charges you to carry-on bags that are bigger than what you can fit under the seat. If you’re traveling with the family, each person can bring a small bag that will fit under the seat free of charge, so fit what you can into those small bags and share your luggage to lower bag fees.
Many of us concentrate on finding the best airfare, which is important, but as you can see, doing a little extra homework on your hotel, car rental and your transportation can also shave a lot of money off your travel expenses.
