A lot of people sign up for daily deal coupon sites like Groupon to get discounts where they live. I’m a fan of these discounts and I use them not only for local deals, but also when I am on the road.

Whenever I have a trip coming up, I’ll sign up for Groupon deals for my destination city a few weeks out and take advantage of discounts during my trip. I’ve done this to save on meals, entertainment and tours during my travels.
I don’t remember the last time I went to a restaurant without a voucher. If you are not familiar with these kind of offers, you sign up for an account, you’ll get emails for the deals and you’ll have a short window to purchase each deal. You will see deals like purchase a $20 voucher that is good for $40 at a select restaurant. You pay the $20 up front and print out a voucher for your deal.
We have used these deals in San Francisco to get discount admission to Alcatraz Island, a 2-for-1 Segway tour over the Golden Gate Bridge to Sausalito, half off dining in the Bay area and half off a spa package. Some of my favorite deals have been when the airlines team up with Groupon.
Virgin America has offered $100 off flights for a payment of $25. Frontier had an offer where you paid $25 for a $50 voucher and Southwest had a deal where you paid $10 for a $40 voucher. These deals have expired, but we could see more to come.
If you want to earn miles, you can earn eight miles per dollar spent on Groupon purchases with American AAdvantage. There is no posted expiration on the deal, but it could end at any time. Visit www.aadvantageeshopping.com for details.
Groupon is certainly not the only game in town. There are many other discounters, like Living Social, Yollar and Tippr to name a few.
Another place to look for discounts is the department of tourism or the convention and visitors bureau. We often see discounts on lodging, restaurants, theme parks, night clubs, museums and more. For travel to Texas cities, I always see deals offered through the San Antonio Convention and Visitors Bureau. Check www.visitsanantonio.com for deals on dining, attractions, hotels and more.
There are also discounts in Houston www.visithoustontexas.com, Austin www.austintexas.org and Corpus Christi www.visitcorpuschristitx.org. We see a lot of deals offered in Florida. Check Visit Florida www.visitflorida.com, or check online for your destination’s tourism or convention and visitors bureau.
One thing to note is you’ll always want to check around to see if the deal you are getting is the best one available. Sometimes discounts sound great, but there may be an even better offer. Before you purchase an online coupon, be sure to read all of the terms and conditions. You don’t want to purchase something you can’t use during your trip, or one that has a lot of restrictions.
