Fly to anywhere American Airlines serves and get Double Elite Qualifying Miles. You will not get double miles, but you will earn double elite qualifying miles.
Bonus elite qualifying miles earned in conjunction with flight activity during 2011 (between now and December 31, 2011) will count towards your 2012 membership year. Bonus elite qualifying miles earned in conjunction with flight activity during 2012 (between January 1and January 31, 2012) will count toward your 2013 membership year.

Your elite qualifying activity (points, miles and segments) from January 1 to December 31 is used to determine your AAdvantage membership level.
You begin receiving elite benefits immediately upon qualification, and as long as you meet the standard qualification requirements, your benefits will last through the end of the next membership year, which runs as follows: The membership year, lasts from March 1 through the final day of February of the following year.
Here are some examples of this elite qualification timeline:
- If you earn 25,000 elite qualifying points or miles on July 31, 2012 your AAdvantage Gold membership is good through February 28, 2014
- If you earn 25,000 elite qualifying points or miles on January 31, 2012 your AAdvantage Gold membership is good through February 28, 2014
Since you begin receiving elite benefits immediately upon qualification, the beginning of your membership year is the day you qualify for your elite level. Then, on March 1, every elite member's year starts over.
If you are an AAdvantage Gold or AAdvantage Platinum member, you earn four 500-mile upgrades for every 10,000 qualifying miles flown during your membership year. The mileage counters that are used to determine the number of 500-mile upgrades earned are re-set to zero every March 1.
Just to clarify, elite qualification miles and your mileage account balance are two separate things. The mileage that you earn when flying, goes towards your mileage account. These miles can be redeemed for free flights, hotels, cars rentals and can also be gifted and transferred to your family and friends. Your elite miles accrue when you fly, but are strictly for keeping track of how many times you have flown during the year, and it helps you know when you are getting close to becoming an elite status frequent flyer.
