American Airlines, which filed for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy, may cut between 13,000 to 15,000 jobs. This would also mean a reduction in flights and places in service.

American, which has a problem in a making a profit, will do whatever is needed to protect the airline. This includes downsizing their staff by as much as 20%.
Currently, American has 73,802 full-time employees. I am sure American will want the remaining employees to pick up the slack and work more hours and increase their productivity to make up the difference.
It should be noted that American Airlines lost almost $900 million is December 2011 alone. That is more than they lost in the first nine months of 2011.
Despite all of this, American Airlines is still forging ahead with the largest aircraft order in history with Boeing and Airbus. American Airlines has 460 new aircrafts on order. They are expected to take delivery of the first plane in 2013.
