Purchase gift cards for use at a variety of merchants and you can get relief at the pump this summer during your vacation or at home.
Kroger’s ‘Hot Savings on Fuel, All Summer Long’ promotion allows customers to save up to $2 off per gallon of fuel through September 30. I recently filled up my 20-gallon tank for $26 with this offer, paying a mere $1.29 per gallon and I haven’t seen prices for gas like that since 1999. To receive the fuel discount, customers redeem points on their Kroger Plus Card for a savings of up to $2 per gallon. Customers normally earn one point per dollar for Kroger purchases on their Kroger Plus Card, four points per dollar for gift card purchases and 50 fuel points for each qualifying prescription.
Throughout the year, you can redeem 100 fuel points to save 10 cents per gallon, 200 fuel points to save 20 cents per gallon, 1,000 fuel points to save $1 off per gallon. Now through September 30, you can also redeem 1,500 fuel points to save $1.50 per gallon or 2,000 fuel points to save $2 per gallon. Customers may purchase up to 35 gallons at the discounted rate per fill up.
Kroger is having a promotion on gift card purchases allowing you to earn four times the number of points for purchases thru September 30. If I buy $100 in gift cards, I can earn enough points for 40 cents off per gallon and if I buy $500 in gift cards, I can earn 2,000 points, which is enough for $2 off per gallon.
Keep in mind that the points you earn must be used the month you earn them, or by the end of the following month, so the purchases you make during the quadruple points offer must be used by the end of Septmber. If you earn 8,000 points during the month of August, you can fill up your tank saving $2 per gallon four times during August and Septmeber.
If you are heading to Disney, buy some gift cards and earn extra gas points. You will have to reserve your Disney Hotel stay with a credit card, but you can always change your form of payment once you arrive and pay with quadruple point earning Disney gift cards. Purchasing some extra cards for your kids to use as spending money at Disney can be a great way to keep them within a spending limit while earning fuel points.
If you’re flying to a city that has Kroger gas stations, such as Atlanta, and renting a car, don’t prepay for your gas, but fill up at a Kroger station. If you are taking a road trip this fall, before you take your trip, check for Kroger gas stations along the way so you can use your fuel points for discounts on your route. If you can get the maximum $2/gallon discount every time you fill up, you will cruise along for much less.
Kroger has an app for your iPhone or Android that makes it easy to find Kroger supermarkets that also have gas stations or you can find Kroger fuel centers online through the Kroger.com website. I’m amazed with the number of different gift cards available and some Kroger stores have close to 200 different merchant’s gift cards. I spend money at 95 percent of the available businesses. When you’re on the road this fall, or even at home, you can dine out with your gift cards.
If you are looking for breakfast, it’s easy to find an IHOP location, if you want a quick meal, you can always find a McDonald’s and there are some multiple restaurant cards, like one for use at On the Border, Macaroni Grill or Maggiano’s.
If you’ve got a home improvement project coming up, or if you’re buying a new refrigerator, why not buy Home Depot or Lowe’s gift cards. You can even buy gift cards for some of the biggest online merchants, like Amazon, Groupon and Ebay and you can also buy gift cards for department stores like Macy’s, JC Penney, Target, Nordstrom, Sears, Staples and more. I feel sorry for all of those restaurants and other merchants that don’t have gift cards at Kroger, because I won’t be dining or shopping there for the next few months.

The offer is also valid at participating Kroger affiliates such as Dillons www.dillons.com/fuel and King Sooperswww.kingsoopers.com/fuel. Points can be earned and redeemed at all Kroger stores, except where restricted by law.
For example, you cannot save more than 10 cents per gallon in Alabama, Louisiana and Missouri, you cannot earn points at affiliates Fred Meyer and QFC in Oregon and Washington and Ralphs has a promotion offering 20 cents off per gallon for redeeming 100 fuel points in California www.ralphs.com/fuel.
I’m upset with myself that I haven’t been doing this more often, but I woke up and smelled the coffee when Kroger made the discount up to $2 per gallon. We see these bonus points offers two to three times per year, but even when the quadruple points offer ends, I will still be buying gift cards. I have the feeling I may have some unspent gift cards at the end of the year, so can you guess what my friends and family are getting for Christmas this year?
