The new year is fast approaching and when it comes to travel we’ve been seeing some unbelievable deals.
We will start off with a Happy New Year because we should see deals all over the place for travel in January and February and sometimes beyond.
The airfare sales we are seeing now have lower fares compared to the fares sales we saw in the beginning of December and these fares could go down even more at the first of the year, once the holiday season is over.
The second week of March through Easter could be 50 percent higher or more than January and February travel and somewhat higher than fares in late spring after Easter, which is March 31 in 2013. The high fares could continue into April, due to spring break in other U.S. cities.
Once we get close to Spring Break, sun and fun destinations will be up, but places like Europe may be reasonable if you can depart by March 20, 2013. Right now we are seeing fares to Europe that are approximately $70 higher than winter rates for travel March 21 through May 15. Departures beginning May 16 through the end of August can be as much as $500 more roundtrip than winter fares.
We expect fares to some destinations to drop, like Hawaii, where we are already seeing fares under $299 roundtrip from Oakland and San Jose, CA. If you are thinking about going to Hawaii, you should check fares daily. When looking for fares to Hawaii, be aware that the worst days to travel are outbound on Saturday and return on Saturday or Sunday, so look for fares on other days. There are a lot of planes that leave Hawaii late at night on Saturday and arrive back to the mainland on Sunday, making that a popular day to travel. Monday-Thursday flights offer the best shot at the cheapest airfares. If we do see deals to Hawaii it will most likely be for travel in January, February or May, 2013. If you see anything under $499 roundtrip to Hawaii, get your credit card out fast and say, “Book me Danno!” and don’t wait.
Three coastal destinations that have been reasonable, even for Spring Break, are Los Angeles, San Francisco and Fort Lauderdale. Los Angeles and San Francisco are very competitive because Virgin America flies those routes and Fort Lauderdale is very competitive thanks to Spirit.
Denver is the hot ticket for ski season because Spirit, Frontier, American and United all fly nonstop on that route. Because Spirit offers flights, it forces Frontier to be very competitive, which in turn forces American and United to be very competitive, leaving travelers with a great choice of fares. At press times, fares from Dallas to Denver were as low as $153 roundtrip, including weekend flights.
Boston and New York City are other markets with low fares because JetBlue competes not only with American, but other airlines too. Fares from Dallas to both cities were $238 roundtrip or less at press time.
Spring break will be our next problem travel period because higher demand brings higher fares. The good news is that spring break fares likely won’t be as high as Christmas and New Year’s fares. The Saturday after spring break starts and the Sunday when it ends are the two worst days to travel due to demand. Everybody wants to leave that Friday or Saturday when spring break starts and people want to return on Sunday. Sundays are usually bad days because it’s a popular return date for leisure travelers and it will be even worse over spring break. You may want to consider a shorter trip during spring break and look at departures on the Sunday, Monday or Tuesday after spring break starts and returns on Friday or Saturday. You could also return the Monday or Tuesday after spring break has ended to qualify for much lower airfares.
When you are heading to a sun and fun destination, take a look at bundled air/hotel package rates. Prices are a little higher in winter because of warm weather, but hands down, Cancun and San Juan offer some of the best values on vacation package rates, especially when you are looking for a 4-star beach resort hotel.
Our favorite Las Vegas deal is back! The offer is valid when you book a three-night or longer air/hotel package with a stay at one of the following nine MGM 4- and 5-star casino resorts: ARIA, Bellagio, Vdara, MGM Grand, Mandalay Bay, THEhotel at Mandalay Bay, The Mirage, Monte Carlo, and New York-New York.
Show ticket choices include Beatles Love by Cirque du Soleil (which can cost $150 per ticket), KA, Zarkana and Zumanity by Cirque du Soleil, Brad Garrett’s Comedy Club, Criss Angel’s Believe, Terry Fator and Tournament of Kings.
