We have been reminding you for the past two months, that we would see one whopper of an airfare sale, starting on some Tuesday in October by Southwest and AirTran.
Well folks, our predictions have come true, and today is that Tuesday, because today the airfare sale we have been waiting for is here; and it's a goodie!
To book a cheap fall or winter Southwest Airlines flight you will need a special promotion code. This promo code will deduct 40% instantly off Southwest's Wanna Get Away airfares.
Travel on Southwest between Nov. 28 through Dec. 12, 2012, and Jan. 7 through Feb. 14, 2013. Travel is valid every day of the week on Southwest, except Sundays. You can still use the promo code, but if any portion of your trip falls on a Sunday, that particular portion of the trip will not be discounted.
If you book with AirTran, you get more travel days, as you can travel between between November 28 through December 18, 2012 and January 4, 2013 through March 1, 2013, and travel is valid for every day of the week!
Please note there are a few additional blackout dates on some select routes, including Las Vegas. AirTran will no longer serve Phoenix, effective January 4, 2013, so you will need to use Southwest Airlines to fly that route.
This is a very short sale, as tickets for this sale must be purchased no later than 11:59 pm Pacific Time, Thursday, October 11, 2012.
It is not clear at this time how the other airlines will try to match Southwest's 40% off sale, since this sale requires a special promotional code. But, we do expect the major airlines to do something very similar in price, without a promo code for the same travel periods.
It may take some of the other airlines such as American, Delta, US Airways, United and others until late afternoon Tuesday, or up to early Wednesday morning, to match Southwest's lowest airfares. Many of the airlines will be able to match AirTran's sale fares much quicker, since there in no promo code involved. Stay tuned to Bestfares.com's homepage for further updates.
