Cheap airfares for the holidays the good, the bad
and the ugly. If you are planning a trip during the high demand, family holiday travel period of Christmas and New
Year's we have good news, bad news and real ugly news.
The
good news is that travelers who can avoid air travel to high demand sun
and fun destinations, such as Florida, the Caribbean, Mexico and Hawaii,
can still find reasonable airfares between many U.S. domestic
destinations.
The
real trick this holiday season for the smart savvy traveler is just three
words. Flexibility, flexibility, flexibility.
With
major airlines cutting back on flights and grounding almost 500 planes
this fall and winter, many travel experts predicted airfares would be sky
high during the high demand Christmas and New Year's travel period. The
good news is if you can avoid the hot destinations, you may be able to
travel at affordable prices
It
appears that the highest airfares during the peak holiday period will be
for departures on December 26, 27 and 28, 2008 and return travel on
January 2, 3 and 4, 2009.
When
we compared airfares between 19 major U.S. cities,
we found that fares for travel on peak holiday travel days from
December 24, 2008 through January 7, 2009 were approximately $145
roundtrip or 60% higher than the airfares that are currently available
during the fall travel season
Travelers
who can be flexible and fly around the peak holiday travel dates may find
there are very little differences between these airfares and the lower fall airfares. We
found to our surprise on the non peak holiday travel dates an increase of
approximately $35 roundtrip or a 16% increase over the fall airfares.
For
travel
to Florida on the peak travel dates we saw an average increase of $311
roundtrip over fall airfares, which was 138% higher. If you can be flexible and travel on
off peak holiday travel dates, we found airfares to be only $48 roundtrip
higher, or
22% higher than the fall airfares.
Holiday
travel
to sun and fun destinations outside the 48 States, such as the Caribbean,
Mexico and Hawaii can be up to three times higher than the fall travel
period. The average increase was $775 roundtrip or 179% higher than fall
airfares. We did see a
dramatic drop in airfare on off peak travel days. The average roundtrip
airfare on non-peak holiday travel dates was $145 roundtrip or 36% higher
than the current fall airfares.
Please
note the above fare comparisons and calculations do not include Florida markets.
